News Reporter / Photographer

The Western Wheel, a community newspaper/website in Okotoks, Alberta, is accepting applications for a permanent, full-time reporter/photographer position.

We are looking for a talented writer able to cover a wide range of beats who has the ability to turn stories around quickly in a digital-first environment.

The successful candidate should also be proficient with a camera and able to photograph a wide range of subjects, including sports.

The position will require a flexible schedule, including possible evening and weekend shifts.

Applicants should have a degree or diploma from a recognized journalism school, or related education/experience.

The Western Wheel is an award-winning newspaper/website and a part of the Great West Media group. The Wheel’s news coverage includes the Town of Okotoks and Foothills County which incorporates a number of smaller towns and villages.

Located just 15 minutes south of Calgary, Okotoks has a population of approximately 30,000 and is an active community hosting a number of entertainment, sports and social events throughout the year.

Qualifications

Superior writing skills and strong news judgment.
A formal degree or diploma in journalism or related experience.
Demonstrated social media skills.
Proficiency in photography.
A valid driver's licence, access to a reliable vehicle and possession of a smartphone are essential.
