2 year apprenticeship
We are looking for an aspiring sports journalist to be the recipient of the Vikki Orvice scholarship set up in memory of our pioneering female reporter Vikki. We are interested in your ambitions and potential - and why you think you can follow the lead of a remarkable journalist.
The Role: You will spend time with our industry leading sports editorial team; learning how to create articles and pitch ideas for one of the country’s most popular sports desks. Helping to pitch ideas and create articles in anticipation of sporting events throughout and after. You’ll learn everything we can teach you about how to create content, tell and share stories, attract, grow and capture an audience.
You will receive mentoring and coaching bespoke to you and delivered by some of the most experienced and journalists in the industry.
Being an apprentice at The Sun During your time with us you will earn above living wage, get full training, including an NCTJ Diploma in journalism – with all your course fees paid.
Day to day you will:
Research and report on the latest sports events, match analysis, transfer rumours, and exclusive stories.
Assist senior reporters in conducting interviews with athletes, coaches, and key figures in the sports world.
support our digital presence by contributing to social media content and engaging with our audience.
Help in crafting articles and features with a focus on developing your writing skills.
Learn the basics of capturing compelling images and footage to enhance our sports coverage.
Experience live event coverage, press conferences, and sports-related events.
What we are looking for from you:
Knowledge of football, particularly women’s football, is a must.
Excellent writing skills with the ability to deliver vibrant, clean copy.
Passion for all things news and a keen interest in women's sport journalism.
Flexible attitude to working hours across seven days including evenings and weekends in line with breaking news.
An understanding of The Sun brand, both print and digital.
Positive can-do attitude and good team player.
More than anything you have a passion for learning.
