Audience Engagement Producer

The Audience Engagement Producer will help convene and lead conversations about the future of Long Island, an essential role of Newsday’s Opinion department. This position will find innovative ways to advance the public policy debate reflected in our editorials, columns, guest essays, cartoons and letters in order to start local and regional discussions. Our goal is to bring Long Islanders together in a constructive and substantive dialogue using our print pages, website, newsletters, social media platforms, short form video, and live events. We’re looking for a candidate with excellent critical thinking skills, who believes informed debate can improve the world and who can engage existing and new audiences in creative ways on all platforms. The position is responsible for outreach and building connections with civic leaders, engaged citizens and curious thinkers from all of Long Island’s communities. This position will be a key part of the nextLI project managed by Newsday’s Opinion team that seeks to use data and conversation to solve regional challenges and map out a better future for Long Island.

Essential Duties & Functions

Conceive and produce content around public policy topics across platforms, working collaboratively with members of the Opinion team, product managers and other staff.

Develop and execute a social media strategy with Opinion content. Notice trends early and help shape content to grow our social presence on video-centric platforms.
Manage audience engagement arc from initial connection to post-events. Use metrics, user research/feedback loops, SEO to drive audience engagement and subscriptions.
Design newsletters and other digital tools to package compelling Opinion content, including copy editing as needed.
Represent nextLI at community meetings, listening to help ensure that our work aligns with community needs and interests
Conduct all nextLI outreach including communications, social media, event planning.

Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications or related field.

Familiarity with Long Island’s political structures, diverse communities and its myriad challenges.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
Experience with user engagement online and social media platforms.
Proficiency in mobile video production
Spanish language proficiency a plus
3-5 years of experience

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $73,800 - $85,000 commensurate with experience.

Physical Requirements

This is a hybrid position. Employees are generally required to work in the office a minimum of three (3) days per week.
