NewsNation seeks a part-time Assignment Editor to work on the network's national desk based in Chicago. The ideal candidate has excellent news judgment, is a clear communicator, natural collaborator, and is also a solution-oriented problem solver. The Assignment Editor is a central part of confirming and relaying key editorial information, supporting field teams: correspondents, producers, and photojournalists, and coordinating with show teams: executive producers, senior producers, segment producers, writers, digital reporters and editors to ensure balanced coverage and optimal reporting resources.
Job Duties:
• Identify news of interest to a national audience
• Generate story ideas and conduct research
• Conduct outreach to sources to confirm key information, and update editorial files
• Monitor and clear user generated content
• Liaise with FeedRoom to ensure recording and ingesting of material
• Utilize various file sharing platforms to gather and distribute video and other elements
• Coordinate coverage of news stories: news of day, breaking news, enterprise stories with correspondents, producers and photojournalists
• Partner with operations to ensure editing and technical support is available and assigned
• Occasionally coordinate booking of transmission facilities and satellite space for live/tape feeds
• Follow and communicate Standards and Editorial guidance and Rights and Clearances restrictions
• Work with 199 Nexstar-owned T.V. stations to harness additional reporting resources and story elements and to provide News Nation content to stations
Qualifications:
• The candidate should have an undergraduate college degree in communications, journalism or related field
• Three to five years of newsroom experience is a must.
• Field producing experience helpful but not required
• Foreign language skills helpful but not required
• The candidate should be organized, quick thinking and aggressive to respond to breaking news in a 24/7 environment.
• The candidate must also have the ability to handle a busy, fast-paced environment, fielding many phone calls and requests from reporters, crews, and producers.
• The candidate should be an effective in both oral and written communication.
• Must be willing to live and work in Chicago, IL
• Must be willing to have a flexible schedule and work extended hours as needed during breaking news
• Must have unrestricted work authorization to work in the United States
