Morning Edition is also a platform for accountability through interviews with government officials and decision-makers who make or influence policy that affect people’s lives. The show also features stories about music, art and books that bring joy and provoke thoughtful conversations about who we are in this world.

A Digital Editor II is assigned stories to edit, produce and publish for various digital platforms such as the NPR website, newsletters, apps and social media. These stories are written and produced by show staff, and are often generated from audio interviews or stories featured in the radio show or podcast. The Digital Editor II works with staff to frame stories, offer structural editorial input, line edit and/or copy edit stories. They will coach and guide editors and producers on writing and identifying attractive headlines and visuals. The Digital Editor II may be assigned to edit the Up First newsletter or other content produced by show staff, not excluding audio stories. They may be assigned to plan, manage and lead editing efforts in the field during reporting trips with show staff or for special news coverage and projects.

A successful candidate for this position is an excellent copy editor that understands the differences between a framing edit, a structural edit, a line edit and a copy edit. They are a writer with flair and accuracy ensuring content is focused and meets NPR standards.

The right candidate for this position is interested in daily news and is eager to deliver the freshest, most important stories to listeners to start their day. They should understand the needs and wants of various audiences, and are motivated to expand digital content offerings from Morning Edition and Up First.

While this position primarily works a Sunday-to-Thursday evening shift, candidates must be able to work a variety of shifts, including dayside, overnight, early, or evening shifts as news coverage and staffing needs change. Morning Edition operates six days a week on a 24-hour basis. Staff are expected to work holidays and weekends as assigned.

This is a union represented role covered under the terms of a collective bargaining agreement with SAG-AFTRA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Edits, produces and publishes stories as assigned for various digital platforms such as the NPR website, newsletters, apps and social media.
Tracks news alerts, headlines and trends, and recommends specific stories and coverage to show managers.
Works with show staff to frame stories, offer structural editorial input, line edit and/or copy edit stories.
Plans, manages and edits field reporting trips, series, special news coverage and other projects.
Ensures content edited meets NPR editorial standards and practices including accuracy.
Provides editorial feedback on stories and content.
Tracks sources using NPR’s Dex system.
Plays a role in shaping editorial standards for the show by participating in conversations and initiatives around diversity, inclusion and equity.
Coaches, guides and trains staff on best practices for writing, editing and producing stories for various digital platforms.
Participates in conversations and plans about audience engagement and growth.
Edits audio stories for the radio show and podcast as needed and as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

At least three years of experience editing stories for digital platforms
Previous experience reporting or producing news stories for digital platforms
At least eight years of overall journalism experience, including national and/or international news
At least three years of experience working on a daily news show or platform.
Ability to work various shifts as needed.
Ability to travel for news coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Radio or broadcast experience is extremely desirable.
Experience working in and/or knowledge of public radio and the public radio system
Proficiency in another language than English such as Spanish, Mandarin or Arabic.
Experience writing and editing audio stories for radio or podcast shows.
Experience in visuals and social media production and/or editing

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Minimum education experience required or preferred. (Ex: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience)

WORK LOCATION

Hybrid Permitted: This is a hybrid permitted role. Some aspects of this role include duties that are better performed at an NPR facility. The employee will be required to be onsite at the Washington, DC office at least 10 days a year. The employee must also reside in an NPR supported location based on the number of onsite days they choose.

JOB TYPE

This is a full time, exempt position.

COMPENSATION

Salary Range: The U.S. based anticipated salary range for this opportunity is $105,000 - $108,000 plus benefits. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salaries NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.

Hourly Rate: The U.S. based anticipated hourly rate for this opportunity is $50.48 - $51.92 per hour. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum hourly rate NPR expects to provide for new hires for the position across all US locations.
