The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) manages the efficient flow of electricity on more than 11,000 circuit-miles of high-voltage transmission lines, dispatching power from hundreds of generating units across the state.
The NYISO’s Communications team invites applications for a full-time Senior Communications Writer.
Reporting directly to the Manager of Corporate Communications and serving as an integral member of the communications team, this position partners closely with the Media Relations Program Lead and subject matter experts across the organization to deliver industry leading content that educates and informs stakeholders on the changing electric grid, climate and environmental policies and regulations, and wholesale electric markets.
The position is also responsible for the development and execution of effective external and internal communications materials, strategies, and other deliverables that drive stakeholder and employee engagement. The ideal candidate will have a strong skill set across a diverse set of communications disciplines, with significant experience in business writing and / or reporting on energy related issues.
The right candidate will be a proven, effective communicator with experience as a writer or editor developing engaging content from technical material. Skilled at establishing interesting and synthesized storylines from complex subjects, the right candidate will be equally comfortable writing blogs, white papers, press releases, social media posts, video scripts, speeches and thought leadership op-eds with executives for publication in trade journals. This position also will serve as an effective editor for internal and external material and content developed by other members of the Corporate Communications and External Affairs teams.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES And RESPONSIBILITIES
Research, write and produce content in a collaborative environment working with subject matter experts across the organization including government, community, and media relations.
Serve as primary author for NYISO’s blog content and other publications including internal newsletters, leadership communications and more
Contribute to video and podcast projects and work directly with videographers and designers to edit, refine, and fact check materials for publication
Interview employees at all levels and on various subject matter expertise to inform content strategy, and key messages
Stay abreast of organizational projects and developments, and work closely with government, regulatory and community affairs to identify and understand issues affecting New York’s grid.
Attend stakeholder committee meetings on occasion as additional research.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree, in an appropriate field of study such as English, Communications, or Journalism required.
Minimum seven years of demonstrated, successful business writing and editorial experience, preferably within the energy industry
Familiarity with earned and paid media approaches
Familiarity with digital media platforms
Additional Requirements
Strong analytical capabilities. Energy industry knowledge or other related business reporting experience strongly desired.
Superior verbal and written communication skills, writing, editing, and project management skills.
Proven track record of strong editing, writing, proofreading, and storytelling experience.
Knowledge of communications disciplines including editorial strategy, project management, relationship building, issue management, crisis communications, internal communications, social media management, and media relations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Salary Range
$74,000 — $123,600 USD
