OPB is hiring a News Editor to support our skilled reporters in covering government and politics throughout Oregon and SW Washington. Our newsroom includes ~30 staff and works closely with other content teams to ensure the news reflects the importance in our region. We use a collaborative process between our editors and reporters in which editors coach journalists through new projects, build beats and stories in partnership and support their growth and development. OPB’s government and politics team produces a mix of daily breaking news, mid-range enterprise reporting and deep-dive investigations that can take months to report and write, as well as the weekly podcast, OPB Politics Now. The editor of this team will receive ample support from other OPB editors and the vice president for news, but needs to be comfortable handling a range of story formats and styles and moving fluidly from the rigors of leading the team through the grind of a legislative session to broader project management. We know that not every candidate will have experience in all of these areas, and we are willing to coach and train! We’re seeking candidates who are passionate about politics, particularly the public service element of our work. If you are eager to grow and take on new challenges, this is your chance! This editor leads OPB’s politics and government team, assigning and editing stories for reporters for the radio and the web, planning and leading coverage of elections and breaking news on government and politics beats and ensuring OPB’s coverage sets the standard for our region. They serve as executive producer of the weekly podcast OPB Politics Now and they both appear on and script segments with reporters on OPB newsmagazines. This position serves as a member of OPB’s news editing team and reports to the Vice President, News. As part of their daily duties, this editor will edit newscast items, radio and digital features and longer-term investigations and projects.
