About PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL)
SRL is an award-winning national youth journalism program that connects classrooms and after school programs to local news organizations and the PBS NewsHour. Thousands of teachers use SRL’s journalism and video production resources, producing multimedia stories that are regularly featured on local and national news media. SRL is helmed by a team of journalism, education, and public media professionals who work closely with our network of students, teachers, and media partners to support youth voice, storytelling, and the future of media.
About the Role:
We are looking for a creative Social Media Associate Producer to produce fun and informative video content with and for teens, and help manage our social media platforms as our team undertakes large-scale content initiatives. This is a full time position. The Social Media Associate Producer must be passionate about celebrating teen voices, creating innovative, quick videos on new platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and finding audiences on social media. Candidates must be highly organized with experience in project management. The Social Media Associate Producer will work closely with SRL’s digital producer, youth media producers, and high school students in our nationwide network.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Social Media Associate Producer will be responsible for producing and creating content for social media for and with students, as well as supporting the Digital Producer in digital content strategy. Their duties include:
Produce, create and edit Instagram and TikTok content on weekly basis
Support digital producer in developing strategic content plan with goals for social media platforms
Engage with online audiences by responding to comments and monitoring activity
Reporting and metrics management of social media content
Write Alt Text for social media posts to make our platforms more accessible
Work across PBS NewsHour, local PBS station and partner digital teams for collaborative opportunities
Work with the SRL team to ensure content is informative, appealing and reflects our mission
You will quickly adapt to working in a hybrid environment and seamlessly use different digital communication tools to connect with colleagues across the country. You understand the importance of working collaboratively and on deadline to achieve a desired goal and familiarize yourself with our mission, work, events and educational resources. In your first 90 days, you will solidify a strategy content plan with SRL’s digital producer for all of the department’s digital platforms.
SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED :
Experience producing fun, creative, and engaging content including TikToks or Reels
Experience and passion for education, media literacy and journalism
A background in social media and digital video production is essential
Excellent knowledge of TikTok, Instagram, YouTube Shorts and other social media best practices
Good understanding of social media KPIs
Excellent multitasking skills
Proven ability to analyze social media data and metrics
Impeccable writing skills and copyediting
Confidence, talent and skills to contribute to our innovative team in meaningful ways, big and small.
Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
Excellent organizational, project planning, presentation and time management skills with careful attention to detail.
Ability to work effectively in an education department that consistently works with leaders and producers in a fast-paced newsroom setting.
Ability to take and give constructive criticism
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to successfully perform in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures while collaborating positively and enthusiastically with a small team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE :
College degree in film, journalism, communication, or a related field.
Minimum 2 years professional experience producing social media content
Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LOCATION
WETA and NewsHour Productions are Washington, DC established media and news organizations. We are a largely local workforce based out of the Campbell Place office in Arlington, VA. WETA and NewsHour Productions value employee flexibility when possible. Most positions based in our Arlington, VA office will be onsite or hybrid, depending upon the role.
