Early Morning Reporter

Know technology and have a nose for news? Can you skillfully edit and write compelling headlines and decks in your sleep? PCMag.com, the leading tech reviews site, is seeking a full-time Reporter to cover the day’s top trending consumer technology news.

We’re looking for someone who can publish stories before the NYC-based PCMag team logs on. The Early Morning Reporter would research topics, find art, write, produce, and publish these stories themselves, so demonstrated experience writing clean and compelling tech-focused news, working in a content management system (CMS), and with news discovery tools is a must.

You must have strong news judgment, be able to identify the most important stories of the day, find interesting, audience-driving topics for slower days, and develop sources for reported features. Ideally, you already have those sources and understand the PCMag brand and what we're all about.

The hours for this role are roughly 4AM-12PM ET, so UK-based (GMT) is preferred.

Job Duties:

Log on early morning NYC time (approximately 4AM ET) to find the day's top consumer tech news
Gather images and produce stories in our CMS
Self-publish until NYC-based editors log on
Attend daily 9:30 a.m. ET news meeting with other members of the team
Write 3-4 news stories per day unless you're working on a longer-form feature
Provide editing help as needed
Have a general knowledge of the top consumer tech topics; a more focused beat can be developed over time based on interest and experience

Job Qualifications:

At least 2-3 years experience writing consumer tech news for a digital publication
Ability to determine trending technology topics and use news-discovery tools for story ideation
Ability to write quickly and clearly, as well as the skills to craft strong headlines and decks to draw readers in.
Strong developmental and line-editing skills
Effective communication skills
Comfortable with image procurement and editing, and producing stories in a CMS
Interest in and understanding of SEO/engagement/audience metrics/news gathering tools like SEMRush, Tableau, Newzdash, and Google Trends
