Piedmont Media, a nonprofit news organization in Northern Virginia, is seeking a deputy editor.
Located less than an hour from Washington, D.C., Piedmont Media operates two print and digital news sites serving Fauquier and Prince William counties. The organization has consistently produced award-winning journalism and is financially stable with strong philanthropic support. Ahead is a transformation of the online presence for two traditional newspapers — the Fauquier Times and Price William Times — to more strongly connect with readers.
The deputy editor reports to the managing editor and will focus on Fauquier County, a popular retreat located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains known for rolling hills, horse farms and wineries. A key community challenge is balancing rapid industrial growth in the region driven by Internet-connected industries against a community desire to conserve the natural landscape and agricultural traditions. Other community needs include addressing rural poverty, educational quality and affordable housing.
The deputy editor will work closely with the managing editor to support all editorial team functions including editing, assigning and supervising reporters, managing copy flow and story budgets, and writing occasional quick-turnaround stories. The deputy editor may also develop a beat built around education coverage. This is a good opportunity for a talented journalist who aspires to take a step toward bigger leadership roles. Bilingual candidates or those who are at least conversational in Spanish are especially encouraged to apply.
The right candidates will:
Be curious about people, community-minded and focused on strong storytelling.
Be fluent and confident using 21st century digital tools, tracking and analyzing online audience trends and building strategies to engage readers.
Have at least five years of experience in journalism, an understanding of online audience management and prior editing experience with strong news judgement and demonstrated writing and editing skills.
Hold a deep belief that good journalism makes a difference.
Be a good teammate and supportive colleague who values others.
Be willing to live in or close to Fauquier County. Some remote work is possible but the role primarily is based in our office in Warrenton, Va.
Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
About the role:
Salary. This is full-time position and pay will depend on experience. The target salary range for this role is $50,000 to $70,000 per year.
Benefits. Piedmont Media offers medical, vision and dental insurance, paid time off including 13 paid holidays, sick time, vacation, and a 401K plan with a 3 percent company match.
