The Associate Editor is a key member of the editorial team and is responsible for providing vital editorial support for our flagship publication, Poets & Writers Magazine, and our website, pw.org, which attracts more than 1.5 million unique visitors per year and is the creative writer’s primary online source for information and advice. Poets & Writers Magazine is an award-winning bimonthly magazine for the creative writing community. The leading journal of its kind, it enjoys a readership of 100,000 and a robust online presence. It is published by Poets & Writers, a nonprofit organization formed in 1970 to help creative writers and the literary community nationwide.

The ideal candidate is a writer as well as an editor with experience working with print and/or online magazines who is familiar with contemporary literature, the challenges faced by writers at various levels of experience, and the ins and outs of publishing, including literary magazines, small presses, literary agents, and the Big Five publishers. Must possess strong developmental and line editing skills, an eagle eye for detail, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a close-knit team in an office environment. This is a full-time position in our New York City office. We offer a hybrid work environment, with opportunity to work from home several days per week; must be available to work in the office two days per week and additionally as required. Annual salary: $50,000, plus benefits including fully paid medical insurance and generous paid time off. The Associate Editor reports to the Editor in Chief.

Responsibilities Include

Editing articles and essays for the Literary Life and Practical Writer departments of Poets & Writers Magazine as well as Online Exclusives.
Planning, assigning, editing, posting, and promoting weekly installments of the online series Writers Recommend and Agents & Editors Recommend.
Promoting new editorial content and audience engagement on Facebook, Twitter/X, and Instagram.
Contributing to the writing of G&A: The Contest Blog; helping to maintain Prize Reporter Twitter/X feed.
Fact-checking articles for Poets & Writers Magazine and the Poets & Writers Guides.
Proofreading galleys and reviewing the final files of each issue of Poets & Writers Magazine.
Contributing articles, essays, and interviews to the magazine and website as needed.
Reading and evaluating submissions.

Qualifications And Experience

At least three years of experience editing for print and/or online magazines.
Excellent journalistic writing, developmental editing, and communication skills.
Strong computer skills, especially in InDesign, Photoshop, and Drupal content management.
Highly organized with attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style.
Proficiency with social media (Twitter/X, Facebook).
Familiarity with literary community and interest in contemporary literature.
Professional, cooperative, enthusiastic attitude.
Strong cultural competency; capacity to work effectively and sensitively with writers from a wide range of backgrounds, including BIPOC writers, LGBTQ+ writers, and others, to bring their work to our readers.
