POLITICO is in a period of growth and transformation. We are organizing our global newsroom around the goal of telling the richest and highest-impact stories about the most important political and policy issues of our time. We are seeking a creative, competitive and intellectually agile Deputy Head of News to help lead coverage in our North American newsroom.
The person in this role will be a vital partner for the Head of News and the other members of POLITICO’s editorial leadership team. They will help drive the daily report across the whole newsroom, manage key teams in partnership with the Head of News, plan coverage of large-scale events and edit some major stories directly. This role will also perform a key function in helping coordinate coverage with POLITICO’s European operation.
The strongest candidates will be people with superb news judgment, writing abilities and organizational skills; broad and diverse subject-matter interests; enthusiasm for working in a fast-paced environment and a sharp eye for detail. Experience with news planning and editing is essential.
What You’ll Do:
Support the Head of News and other newsroom leaders in setting POLITICO’s day to day coverage agenda
Partner with newsroom leaders and team editors to generate story ideas and large-scale editorial projects
Manage the daily news budget and track key longer-term initiatives that are editorial priorities
Work with the Global Editor in Chief, Executive Editor, Executive Director of Global Newsroom Strategy and other newsroom leaders in the U.S. and abroad to shape POLITICO’s editorial agenda and build collaboration across the global newsroom
Line-edit key stories, including breaking news that may be highly sensitive or competitive
Work closely with POLITICO’s audience, engagement and news presentation teams to maximize the impact and reach of our report
What You’ll Need:
4+ years of experience managing news teams and editing stories
Excellent organizational skills and capacity to track multiple urgent priorities at the same time
A creative brainstorming mind; an eagerness to come up with story ideas and explore the big themes of the news with original angles
Sharp line-editing and writing abilities
Strong communication skills across phone, email and in-person
Willingness to learn and grow with the company; ability to take and give feedback and consistently work to achieve better results
Experience working in international news helpful but not required
