The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram seeks an outstanding, accomplished journalist to serve as its opinion editor. We are an ambitious news organization with high standards, and we need a superb journalist for this critically important role.
The opinion editor will be charged with overseeing, executing and rethinking an ambitious and important part of our work. This editor shapes the Press Herald’s positions and messages; produces a provocative and timely Sunday perspectives section; writes editorials as well as a weekly column; recruits and works with freelance columnists; oversees the selection and publication of letters to the editor; chooses syndicated and wire opinion pieces for publication; engages with readers and the community, both online and in person; organizes events for subscribers; and runs editorial board meetings, sometimes with community leaders, politicians and others. The opinion editor provides space in our newspaper and website for a plethora of perspectives and viewpoints, and ensures that a variety of voices are represented in our report, with a particular eye toward diversity, equity and inclusion. The opinion editor supervises an assistant editorial page editor as well as the work of a news assistant.
