Sports Reporter

The Ravalli Republic, a three-day print publication with a daily E-edition and website, is seeking a 30-hour per week reporter to cover sports for an award-winning Lee Enterprises paper that is growing to keep pace with the picturesque Bitterroot Valley communities we serve.

This newly created position comes with full benefits and preferably will be based in Hamilton or another community in the bustling valley south of Missoula. The successful candidate will cover high schools in six towns passionate about sports and also become a key member of our highly successful statewide 406 MT Sports team, with an opportunity to cover state events.

Once a small paper, the Ravalli Republic now boasts four robust sections, including a sports cover for the first time. Strong writing and reporting skills are most important, along with an understanding of social media. The ability to handle a camera for images and video is a bonus. Our hire will join a staff comprised of an editor, two part-time news reporters, a part-time photographer and a copy editor/page trafficker.

Coverage includes high schools in Hamilton, Corvallis, Stevensville, Florence, Victor and Darby as well as features on athletes who participate in marathons, triathlons, trail runs, alpine and Nordic skiing, and other outdoor events. A perk of the job is living, working and playing between towering mountain ranges whose snow packs feed the trout-rich Bitterroot River on its journey to Missoula, a flourishing nearby city with a lively arts, entertainment and restaurant scene as well as the University of Montana.
