Tutorial Editor

New Posted 20 December 2023 | Remote | Real Python

Do you have a passion for editing and want to get your work in front of millions of readers?

Real Python (realpython.com) is a leading provider of online education for the Python programming language and one of the largest language-specific online communities for software developers.

With our in-house team of 10 employees and over 130 freelance contributors we publish high-quality learning resources, such as tutorials, books, and courses to an audience of 3,000,000 monthly readers.

It feels amazing how far we've come—but we think we can do even better! To help us raise the quality level of our tutorials even further, and expand beyond the topics we’ve covered so far, we are growing our team.

We are looking for a great Tutorial Editor to join our team. Keep reading to find out what’s involved and how you can apply.

What You'll Be Doing

As a member of our content team, you'll report to the content operations manager and work closely with our educators and content creators to ensure and improve the quality of new text-based learning materials published by Real Python.

In this role, new text-based educational content we publish on realpython.com passes through you for structural feedback and copyediting. You'll participate in our publishing process in the following ways:

You'll give Didactic Review feedback on new tutorials: At Real Python, we aim to provide great information in an accessible way with a personal touch. This means that we need to make sure that there are as few barriers as possible between our readers and the information we want to give them. The purpose of the Didactic Review is to remove as many of those barriers as possible to make our tutorials the best learning resources they can be.
During Didactic Review, you'll give authors feedback on the structure of their tutorials to ensure they are well-structured and accessible for their target audience.
You'll do a Language Edit pass on new tutorials: After structural and technical feedback has been resolved by the author, you'll perform a final editing and proofreading pass to fix any remaining typos, grammatical issues, and formatting problems.
In this final editing phase, you'll focus on tone, clarity, and formatting (as well as adherence to our style guide) so we can deliver on our high quality standards and guarantee consistency for our students.
You'll set up new tutorials to go live on realpython.com: After a tutorial has passed all of the review and editing phases, you'll set up the article on the realpython.com website using our custom content management system. This means adding metadata such as category tags, title artwork files, the list of contributors, and then scheduling the article for publication.
You'll edit video course transcripts: You'll edit the transcripts for new video courses for accuracy and to ensure they're formatted according to our style guide.
You'll set up new video courses in the realpython.com CMS: You collect finished video course materials (lesson descriptions, edited videos, downloadable code, slides) and organize them for publication on realpython.com using our content management system.
You'll help improve our internal style guides and overall standards for tutorial structure and copyediting: "Iterating to perfection" is our motto and there's always something we can improve to give our readers a better experience. Share your expertise and ideas as you'll help guide and coach other team members by participating in conversations about language and formatting.

Requirements

We're looking for a Tutorial Editor with a passion for editing and an interest in Python who has:

A knack for teaching and making information easy to absorb
A detailed grasp of the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of written English
An instinct for how to analyze text in order to rearrange it in a way that is clearer, both conceptually and visually
Precision of thought to address potential ambiguities and misunderstandings in our articles
An ear for tone
Basic technical knowledge of HTML and web publishing. Experience with SEO, using Markdown, and online collaboration tools like GitHub, Trello, and Basecamp/Slack is a plus. Basic familiarity with Python or other programming languages is a plus.
Timezone overlap with Central European Time and Pacific Time

You’ll work closely with our content creators in this role and we will train you on the technical details and the specifics of our publishing process and style guide—so you don’t have to be an experienced programmer, but you do need to be able to both put yourself in the readers’ shoes and be a good communicator.

We’re looking for a long-term collaboration with someone who’s eager to learn and grow, and comfortable using modern communication tools on our 100% remote-first and globally distributed team. Bonus points if you enjoy a good dog meme! :-)
