The Reporter & Farmer, a state and national award-winning weekly newspaper located in the heart of the Glacial Lakes Region in Webster, South Dakota, is seeking an ambitious general assignment reporter to cover a range of beats including, but not limited to, local government news, elementary through high school sports and activities, personal and entertainment features plus community events. We are the official paper of Day County and cover seven towns plus several unincorporated residential areas, two school districts and some tribal news. With a 141-year history, we are the oldest continuous business and the leading voice of our community. We are a weekly snapshot of history, that “newsletter from home,” a public bulletin board of local events and our area’s government watchdog. Our economy is driven by the ag and hunting and fishing industries. A motivated, enthusiastic, driven reporter will not get bored. The ideal candidate will be someone who is friendly, gets along well with others and is a team player. They should be prepared to plug in to the community, make connections, develop sources and local story leads. They must be the kind of person who takes directions well, is willing to jump in wherever they’re needed to get the job done and above all has a passion for telling and recording this community’s unique story. Having a firm understanding of reporting basics, such as journalistic writing style and interviewing skills, is a must. They should have the ability to ask the questions that will help them understand the topic at hand and be able to tell the story to the public in a compelling and unbiased way. Knowing how to find and take the right photo to go with each story a plus.
