Reuters is seeking an experienced journalist to lead our news coverage from the Gulf, a compelling region of profound importance to energy supplies, trade and investment flows and international security.
Based in Dubai or Riyadh, you will be an exceptional journalist who can lead teams to produce fast breaking news, agenda-setting exclusives and deeply reported projects. You will be a strong writer who can quickly relay the significance of events in the region to an international audience, whether working on financial news or a geopolitical story.
You will work closely with industry editors for energy and finance to ensure we deliver agenda-setting coverage in these two critical areas of the file. You will also work closely with visuals colleagues and understand a variety of story-telling formats and techniques.
You will coach younger staff in the region and work with the Reuters learning team to develop and promote them. You will ideally speak Arabic and be a skillful communicator and collaborator who can manage a diverse team of journalists.
As our Gulf Bureau Chief, you will:
Demonstrate excellent news judgment in real time
Be able to prioritise coverage and know when to let go of smaller stories
Work with teams to generate smart and agenda-setting story ideas
Ensure Reuters clients get the news first, even as you drive deeply reported stories
Understand the needs of our main client groups: LSEG, agency media and digital professional clients
Foster great story ideas, including enterprise pieces
Make and cultivate contacts, producing exclusive news stories, and encourage the team to do the same
Multimedia skills an advantage
Fluent Arabic a distinct advantage
To be our Gulf Bureau Chief, you will likely:
Have a deep knowledge of the Gulf and come to the role with existing contacts
Have experience working in hostile environments, including conflicts or natural disasters
Have a proven ability to cultivate high-level sources, break news and deliver deeply reported, high-impact stories
Have at least seven years of experience as a journalist, including working for international outlets in a real-time news environment
