We are seeking an experienced sub editor with at least 10 years of editing experience, excellent writing skills, strong news judgment, and a strong track record of team management.
You will play a key role in ensuring all our stories are fair and accurate, with sharp SEO headlines, compelling leads, and overall engaging writing. You have a keen interest in stories on climate change, socio-economic / gender / racial equity, ethical business, and technology and their impact on people. You have a meticulous eye for detail and are a stickler for good writing, sound sourcing, fact-checking, story structure and SEO. You understand social media and know the difference between a good headline and a good tweet.
Your editing and writing experience commands respect among your team and in the newsroom. You have a knack for guiding correspondents and your team of sub editors to get the best possible work out of them by looking beyond the obvious, spotting trends, adding insight and coming up with suggestions to move stories forward. You help turn every short-form story, feature, long-read, and investigation into a delightful reading experience.
You read widely and are up-to-date on international news and current affairs.

About You
As our Chief Sub Editor in, you will:
Help edit a global file covering climate change, socio-economic inequality and the impact of technology on societies
Line manage a team of sub editors
Work with editors, correspondents, planning and audience to ensure timely and optimal allocation of sub-editing resources to stories
Edit stories to Thomson Reuters Foundation’s editorial and ethical standards, adhering to style, guidelines and policies
Ensure stories have solid sourcing, accurate and fair language, context and actionable content that our audiences need
Work with Audience team to champion the use of SEO in all output
Facilitate use of multimedia storytelling
Provide editorial and language guidance on video scripts
Coach and mentor correspondents on best practices, style and story structure
Give editors and correspondents ongoing guidance on output quality
About You
To be our Chief Sub Editor, you will likely have:
Extensive experience writing and editing international stories
Talent for making complex ideas accessible and understandable
Experience line managing small teams of editors
Solid command of written English
Sound knowledge of sourcing, and fact-checking techniques
Sound knowledge of Reuters style and Trust Principles
Good understanding of SEO and storytelling for digital audiences
Broad knowledge if world events, especially when it comes to climate change, socio-economic inequality and impact of technology on societies
Reasonable understanding of social media
Excellent communication and coaching skills
