The Multimedia Journalist (Durango) uses advanced shooting, editing, and writing skills to produce compelling daily content for digital and broadcast platforms. The position specializes in visualization of complex concepts, facts and data using advanced video editing, and documentary/news-style videography techniques, as well as writing and copy editing. The MMJ researches and develops original story ideas, develops sources, and investigates, gathering information, images, and audio for news reports and program segments to enrich public conversation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Produces, writes, shoots, and edits local digital and broadcast-ready content - averaging one story per week - while following PBS, NPR, and FCC technical standards.
Identifies, researches, and pitches local story ideas.
Recruits, trains, and manages student interns in partnership with Fort Lewis College.
Provides in-person workshops and support for students in partnership with Fort Lewis College.
Initiates and supports meaningful dialogue with individuals and groups identified as assets in the Four Corners.
When assigned, assists with statewide productions like Colorado Voices, Colorado Experience, pledge tapings and special programs.
Maintains local field equipment.
Strives to meet the mission of the organization, collaborating, as necessary, with other departments and internal and external partners.
Vets all sources with journalistic integrity. Meets or exceeds expectations on quality control and editorial integrity of assigned productions and projects.
Supervises editing, delivery, and distribution of segments, shows or other content.
Ensures that content rights and releases are acquired as necessary for assigned programs.
Other tasks as assigned and/or required.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL JOURNALISM TEAM MEMBERS
Attends weekly content meetings providing useful input and story ideas.
Responsible for daily production of responsive content and special project work when required.
Shoots, edits, and/or writes content for multiple platforms of RMPM to help further the mission of creating a Colorado where everyone feels seen and heard.
Engages with communities in Colorado to create an open door for content. Meet with community leaders to listen to and hear story ideas. Represents RMPM at community events.
Actively participates in RMPM's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) training program. Uses key standards and teachings of DEI training when producing daily responsive content generation.
Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable MVR; must be insurable for driving station vehicles.
Fluency in Spanish (verbal and written) is a plus.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in journalism, mass communications, broadcast communications, television production or related field with strong evidence of achievement.
Strong technical abilities (ADOBE Creative Suite, Audio/Video equipment, etc.), including editing with Premiere Pro CC, and shooting with field equipment.
Minimum 1-3 years of experience in all areas of video production.
Possesses proven skills and abilities as an innovative and effective storyteller.
Works responsibly within an established budget.
Exhibits extensive experience with troubleshooting and addressing equipment failures. Possesses the ability to perform light maintenance and repairs on field equipment, including both audio and video.
A mix of demonstrated skills, abilities and knowledge may be considered in place of educational requirements.
Valid driver's license and an acceptable MVR insurable for driving station vehicles.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Office at the Ballantine Media Center in Fort Lewis College with work-from-home options and offsite video production. This position must be able to work a flexible schedule with occasionally long hours including some evenings and weekends. Must be able to travel throughout the state and beyond, on occasion.
