The Role: In this high-profile role, you will head up a four-member team producing The Energy Daily, a long-running, well-regarded energy business newsletter. As team lead, you will play a pivotal role managing news flow – scheduling daily coverage of TED staff, plus across the larger S&P Global Commodity Insights news operation. In addition to monitoring TED staff daily assignments, you will oversee editing of copy in conjunction with a separate editing desk. The team lead also is responsible for end-of-day content management and publishing/layout.
You and the rest of the TED staff will report on natural gas, power, commercial nuclear, renewables and the ongoing energy transition, with emphasis on North America policy, regulation and related federal and state government activity. You will be expected to think ahead, covering potential developments and shifts in US policies. Corporate strategy and developments in the energy space also will be a focus.
This is a Regulatory Team position, with primary responsibilities for coverage of federal legislation, regulation, enforcement and policy; hands-on access to and coverage of the White House, other executive branch agencies, Congress, the courts and the lobbying machine are critical to maintaining our well-rounded and deep coverage. This coverage is especially important considering the ongoing political battles over the transition away from fossil-fired generation to renewables and nuclear power and to vastly build out the nation’s power grid.
You must write well and be numerate. A commitment to the highest journalistic standards is expected. A curiosity about the energy industry -- energy commodities in particular – will provide a resourceful self-starter with plenty of material to assign to team members and develop on their own. A sharp understanding of the ongoing US energy transition, along with natural gas and power markets and regulation, will be an advantage.
We are looking for a journalist who can develop reliable sources in government and non-government organizations, with the aim of producing forward-looking breaking news stories, while directing and motivating a team of reporters to do the same.
The Team: Your manager will be the head of Regulatory/Policy News for the Americas, but you will also interact with the managers of other energy commodity news teams. You will be surrounded by experienced journalists and analysts committed to accuracy, fairness, timeliness and relevancy. It’s a fast-paced newsroom environment that is congenial and professional.
The Impact: This is a critical role, a key part of the global Commodity Insights news team. Based in the US capitol, this position focuses on the highly significant policy, regulatory, diplomatic and political initiatives and developments driven by the White House, executive agencies, Congress and other elements of government, business, markets, technology, research, advocacy and academia. The valuable journalistic content produced by the larger TED team contributes in an important way to the overall news and pricing products provided to a wide and deep range of global customers who look to us for timely, reliable and actionable information for use in critical decision making.
What’s in it for you: The Commodity Insights culture emphasizes growth and development – and rewards initiative. You will collaborate with and learn from a diverse universe of colleagues in offices around the world. Training is available to aid development of all aspects of your career. Your peers will support you and value the contributions you make to your team. With support from managers and colleagues, you will have the opportunity to grow and develop new skills.
Responsibilities:
Daily planning and assignment of news coverage for four-person reporting team.
Managing workflow and editing stories throughout the day.
Coordinating coverage with other editors, helping to share stories and avoid story duplication across Commodity Insight product offerings.
Contributing to real-time alert services, the web and other publications.
Producing content and overseeing news gathering in a wide variety of situations such as conferences, weekend emergencies, etc.
Developing a broad and diverse industry source base.
Contributing frequently to digital media activities, including the weekly Platts Capitol Crude podcast.
