Sactown magazine in Sacramento is looking for a talented managing editor to help manage our day-to-day editorial operations. The ME will work closely with the editors-in-chief (who own the magazine) to conceive, assign and edit both short and feature-length stories for print and online (features can range from 2,000-8,000 words). The city magazine is a dynamic bimonthly publication that covers topics including food, the arts, politics, architecture, design, business, travel and more.
Before launching Sactown in 2006, the magazine's founders/co-editors spent 10 years in NYC as staff writers for Money Magazine, InStyle and SmartMoney, and as freelance writers for New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Metropolis and elsewhere.
Sactown has won dozens of awards for its editorial, design, illustration and photography, including the Western Publishing Association award for Best City Magazine, and City & Regional Magazine Association (CRMA) Awards for Best Food Writing, Best Profile (for our story on author William T. Vollmann), and Column Excellence. We've won Folio Awards for Best Essay and Best Cover Design, as well as Society of Professional Journalists awards (Northern California chapter) for Best Photo Essay and Best Longform Storytelling.
This position requires:
• A minimum of 5 years of editing experience at a consumer magazine and/or an alt-weekly (B2B and college publications would not count toward this minimum)
• Experience editing service journalism, as well as personality profiles and other longform features on a broad range of topics
• The ability to generate smart, surprising, timely story ideas, and take stories from concept to ship-out
• The ability to meet and manage multiple deadlines
• The candidate must also be detail-oriented and experienced in line-editing and basic copy-editing.
