SELF produces science-backed, human-focused content our audience can trust. We’re not here to fearmonger, judge, or gloss over the facts—we inform, motivate, and entertain readers. We do that by focusing on four key brand values: inclusivity, accuracy, empathy, and autonomy.
We are seeking an experienced, thoughtful Senior Health Conditions Writer to be primarily responsible for pitching and writing sponsored content for SELF’s Conditionally hub, ensuring that it is engaging, medically accurate, and inclusive. Whether they’re covering migraines, fibroids, or RSV, this person will handle every story with nuance and care.
The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in writing and editing health conditions content and must be comfortable handling multiple stories at once, at various stages of the pitch-to-publish process (finalizing your pitches while fact-checking a different story; doing reporting for one, restructuring a draft of another, etc.)
This position will report to SELF’s Health Conditions Director.
Responsibilities:
Write/publish three to five health conditions articles per week, focusing on service-minded articles and explainers, totaling 12 to 15 pieces published per month.
For all sponsored/commercially driven assignments, ensure all content meets the needs and expectations of both the client and the SELF brand.
Rigorously report and fact-check and edit a draft before filing it to the top editor.
Update your editorial slate and lineup with realistic deadlines and publish dates.
Brainstorm and write copy for larger Conditionally initiatives and projects as needed.
Occasionally participate in brand extension opportunities, such as appearing in social content or attending SELF events.
Use analytics to hone your editorial strategy. If something isn’t working, you’ll try something new.
Requirements:
A minimum of five years of relevant health/wellness writing and service journalism experience.
A thorough understanding of the nuanced health conditions landscape - fantastic scientific literacy including knowing what evidence, sourcing, and fact checking are necessary to write accurate, conversational articles about complex health topics.
Experience working with a medical review board and implementing expert feedback, as well as basic knowledge of SEO best practices.
A keen eye for thought-provoking health stories that resonate with readers. We need you to have razor-sharp instincts both in terms of the health landscape and how to get readers to meaningfully engage with health conditions stories.
The ability to write clean, accurate, and fun copy in a fast-paced environment, and in a conversational, approachable tone that establishes a clear point of view.
Stellar communication skills, both with colleagues and freelance contributors.
A strong belief in inclusivity as it relates to identity, body size, and health.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $85,000 - $115,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
