This Part-Time, Contract, Senior Editor position requires pedagogical knowledge in early elementary literacy instruction (grades k-3). This role requires strong knowledge of phonics and how to create DECODABLE texts and supporting documentation (e.g. phonics target skills, decodability measures, HFW lists, scope and sequences etc.).
The Senior Editor’s primary emphasis is on reviewing and editing manuscripts, poured pages, and providing constructive feedback to team members as necessary. With supervision, the Senior Editor will coordinate with the Project Manager from manuscript stage to final product and will oversee the work of freelance writers.
As a Developmental Editor, this person will ensure reading levels are appropriate and characters are consistent across a series of K - 1 books.
This role will require up to 20 hours per week.
Primary Responsibilities:
With support, write/update writer’s guidelines for Grade K and Grade 1 Decodable books.
Coordinate and communicate with decodable book writers, according to schedule and scope and sequence.
Edit/re-write manuscripts as needed.
Incorporate client feedback into revision of texts and/or effectively communicate feedback to writers.
Check and maintain documentation of decodability measures
Ensure compliance with brand, writing, and image guidelines.
Ensure consistency in quality, content, storylines and continuity across books.
Monitor appropriateness of text material as to reading level, content accuracy and currency, DEI and SEL content.
Participate in evaluation of sketches and choice of images.
Coordinate with team on creation of ancillary Teacher Support materials for Decodable books.
With support, maintain and review alignment documents.
