Sifted is looking for a subeditor to join our fast-growing team covering the world of European startups and tech.

We’re looking for a detail-oriented wordsmith who can subedit copy quickly, cleanly and accurately, factcheck thoroughly, hone articles for SEO and ensure consistency of editorial voice.

As subeditor, you will be the lynchpin of Sifted’s newsroom and work closely with all of our journalists and editors, along with several key members of the broader company. You will also have plenty of opportunities to develop new skills and contribute to Sifted’s range of products, from newsletters to podcasts.

What will you be doing?

From our (soon to be) daily flagship newsletter to data briefings and the dozens of articles we publish per week, it will be your mission to ensure that everything we publish reads beautifully, is true to Sifted style and is free from any spelling, grammatical, factual or formatting errors. You will also be responsible for ensuring we follow SEO best practice.

Core duties include:

Subbing and proofreading all copy across Sifted — which includes website articles, newsletters, data briefings, commercial, marketing and events copy — to an impeccably high standard
Meticulous fact checking
Crafting excellent headlines
Optimising headlines, standfirsts, images, charts and links for SEO
Flagging any legal issues with copy
Maintaining and updating, where necessary, the Sifted brand, tone of voice and style guides and ensuring they are used consistently in-house and by freelancers

Requirements

So what are we looking for?

Meticulous attention to detail and a fastidious approach to fact checking and accuracy
Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal and relationship management skills
Two or more years’ demonstrable subbing or editing experience in a fast-paced digital news or business publishing environment
Confidence in fact checking financial figures, data and charts
A strong understanding of media law and how to uphold best journalistic practice
Good knowledge of the startup industry is a bonus

Bonus points:

A solid understanding of SEO and a working knowledge of SEO research tools like Ahrefs
A good understanding of evergreen content strategies

Salary of £30k-40k (dependent on experience)
