Slate is hiring a senior editor to oversee our business, technology, and/or science coverage. Expertise in all three sections (business, technology, science) is not a requirement, but a strong interest in at least one and a strong desire to contribute to building a section that covers all three in an interesting and distinctive way is a must.
We are looking for a strategic editorial mind with high energy, great ambition, and appropriate skepticism who is just as excited by working on a longform feature as they are by executing the perfect same-day analytic response to a big news event. Slate editors are specifically tasked with working on a mix of short, medium, and long, so nimbleness and an understanding of what argument warrants what kind of length is critical. This editor must be collaborative, full of ideas, and hungry to develop writers’ pitches into great stories, arguments, investigations, and other creative projects. The section has historically covered a wide range of topics, from economics to mental health, from the gig economy to the rise and ongoing fall of social media, from the replication crisis in psychology to infrastructure in cities, and from climate change to the proper way to exercise. There is lots of room to move around here, depending on the subjects the editor feels are most relevant to the way we live now. We are looking for an interest in subjects that will be both relevant and surprising to our readers.
Slate has offices in New York and D.C., though exceptional remote applicants will be considered. To apply, please upload a résumé and short cover letter explaining how you would approach this job.
