Yahoo UK is looking for an assistant news editor with a strong background in reporting to join its growing editorial team.
You will have experience of newsgathering, content planning, commissioning and writing news of national significance, a passion for current affairs and excellent news judgement.
We understand that users often feel overwhelmed by the constant stream of information at their fingertips. Ideal candidates will play a key role in helping us create memorable and unique content around the most important issues in a way that builds a loyal audience and positions Yahoo as a destination that users can rely on to provide unbiased, useful and valuable information.
Yahoo is both a content creator and curator, and journalists who join the team are challenged to think creatively to discover new ways of producing original content that complements the content already on our site from a wide range of partners.
This is a full-time role and we will consider candidates based anywhere in the UK, although some presence in our London office will be required when needed.
Main Responsibilities
Work closely with the Head of News and News Editor to drive and implement a strategy focused on audience growth
Work with editors and reporters to commission and write news stories and explainers around our key content areas of focus, eg the cost of living crisis, war in Ukraine, royal family
Edit and write accurate copy, quickly and to deadline
Work closely with social and SEO editors to ensure we are maximising the reach of our content
Be able to use SEO and social platforms as a tool for sourcing stories
Be comfortable using analytics platforms to understand content performance
Ideal Candidate
At least three years’ experience of digital journalism in a regional, national or international news organisation
Experience of using data-visualisation tools or understanding how they can enhance story-telling
A demonstrable track record of creating content that grows and retains an audience
First rate communication skills, both written and verbal.
NCTJ qualification or equivalent - particularly around media law and compliance
Competent user of Photoshop and other digital media tools designed to enhance content
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
A flexible approach to shift work - this role will involve some nights and weekends, with time back in lieu
