At Yahoo News, we are building the best guide to the Internet (and the world) by making it easy to discover the most useful and interesting content online. We do this by collaborating across teams to deliver high-quality content and engaging experiences to the 35 million users who come to us every day. Under a new leadership team, we are committed to revitalizing this well-recognized and reliable source of breaking news, entertainment and lifestyle content and positioning it for the future. As part of an effort to make discovery delightful, become the world’s best curator and create connections with users through rich and valuable content experiences, we are building a team focused on live and trending news, and seeking a Director of Live + Trending News to help shape the team and direct coverage. This role is central to the success of Yahoo News and will set a strategy to grow our audience by placing readers at the heart of our decision-making and offering them the best possible experience.
A lot about you
The right person for this role will have a passion for storytelling, an extremely high news metabolism and the unrelenting reflex to jump into action during big breaking and trending news moments that require continuous real-time live coverage. We are interested in expanding the scope of what it means to cover a topic as “live” and are looking for someone with great ideas on what that might look like. Equally important for success, our ideal candidate will consistently find unique angles and lead the team to deliver compelling and differentiated stories pegged to the day’s driving news narratives and and online conversations. The role requires wide-ranging news interests (you may assign politics one hour and pop culture the next!), solid social newsgathering skills, and the ability to deliver sharp storytelling under tight turnaround times. The reporting and coverage created by the live and trending team will contribute to Yahoo’s mission to be the best guide by consistently publishing content that adds context, cuts through noise, breaks down complex topics and overall helps our users better understand the world.
