The Associate Editor acquires and publishes content within part of the existing portfolio book program. The focus is to drive the growth of the program and develop their own book list as part of the strategically defined overall portfolio for the Publishing Unit.
Responsibilities
Identify authors and support them in developing and producing their projects.
Solicit, read and evaluate book proposals offered by authors, as well as assess their suitability for the list.
Meet goals set by editorial management such as contracts signed and manuscripts handed over to production.
Manage the existing lists associated with the assigned subject area, and maintain profitable relationships with authors, book series editors and advisors.
Negotiate contract terms with authors.
Remain a point of contact for authors/editors throughout the publication process.
Research market trends on a national and international level.
Manage the back-list, make decisions on publishing potential and new editions of successful titles.
Conduct market and competitive research in assigned subject area.
May provide administrative support to their manager as part of maintaining integrity of the overall publishing programme.
Business travel (domestic/international) as required
Essential
Experience, Skills and Qualifications
Excellent English language skills.
Educated to degree [or PhD] level or equivalent [preferably in a relevant field of study]
Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and be numerate and IT systems-literate, with a strong attention to detail.
Be able to organise and prioritise numerous tasks and be able to work on their own initiative.
Be resourceful and proactive in dealing with problems and queries.
Have excellent team-working skills to deal with people within the company and externally at all levels.
Excellent networking skills.
Ability to work independently within a (virtual) team environment.
Desirable
Demonstrate diplomacy and assertiveness.
Previous experience in academic publishing.
