About The Role

The BMC Series is a collection of community-focused, open access journals that cover all areas of chemistry, life sciences, health and medicine. The ethos of these journals is that editorial decisions are not based on the perceived impact or interest level of papers, but on rigorous science. The BMC Series is currently seeking an Associate or Senior Editor to lead a portfolio of life sciences and bio-medical journals. You will contribute to the success of this portfolio by working strategically with the journals’ external editorial boards to help drive the content development of these journals to ensure their future success, and adapt your strategies to meet the emerging needs of their related communities. Manuscript handling is a key part of this role. No prior editorial experience is required as full training is given, although applicants with significant editorial experience will be considered for a Senior Editor position. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to join a dynamic team of scientific editors whose values centre around the promotion of open, robust and reproducible science. This role is located in our London or Berlin office on a hybrid working model.

Role Responsibilities

Develop a journal development strategy for each journal in your portfolio
Handling original research papers published in BMC Series journals, primarily by advising on content handled by editorial board members, but also by handling individual submissions yourself where required
Build excellent communications and relationships with Editorial Board Members and authors
Identify and commission reviews, collections and supplements
Investigate and resolve publishing or research ethics cases, both pre- and post-publication, with the guidance of Springer Nature Research Integrity Group
Contribute to the efforts of the marketing team, developing journal website content and features that are of interest to the community
Attending conferences and visiting research institutes to engage with the communities and to represent the journal.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

Educated to PhD level (or equivalent) in the life sciences or in a biomedical field
Broad scientific interests and a passion for science.
An interest in open access publishing
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a customer-focussed approach
Ability to work in a team and with colleagues at all levels.
Excellent time management and prioritization skills, and ability to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals.
Self-starter attitude with strong analytical skills and the ability to problem-solve and adapt
Previous editorial experience is required for candidates applying for the Senior Editor position
