As an Associate Publisher, you would be responsible for a defined list of journals, working as part of the team to growth the journal portfolio through strategic journal development. In this role, you will be proactive, creative, and data driven to devise and implement these development strategies on a journal and portfolio level. As the primary contact for your journals, you’ll work alongside top academics as well as colleagues from across the business, meaning excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships are key to the smooth running and success of your portfolio. In this role, you’ll gain exposure to all aspects of the journal publishing industry.
The Associate Publisher role is suited to individuals with at least a Bachelor’s degree (preferably with a biology/biomedicine background, but not required) who are very interested in science and biomedicine. Ideally, candidates should have some prior publishing experience (journals or books) so you are familiar with the publishing workflow for scholarly journals content.
Responsibilities
Overseeing a portfolio of academic journals in biomedicine, and in genetics in particular
Strategic management of existing journals in order to improve impact, visibility and usage
Building and managing relationships with editors, authors, learned societies; resolving queries and hosting editorial board meetings
Working alongside Editors and Editorial Board members to increase journal visibility, submissions and reputation within the field.
Preparing, negotiating and executing publishing contracts
Developing knowledge of the fields the portfolio operates within (e.g. to identify important journals/features/hot topics etc.) and use knowledge to actively identify journal development opportunities.
Building excellent relationships and team working within the immediate team and other departments.
Requirements
Advanced academic degree in biomedicine, life sciences or medicine
Experience in working with academics in an international environment
Basic experience in managing academic journals and society affiliations from a publisher, society or academic perspective
Positive and proactive approach to problem solving, taking ownership to drive and complete tasks
Strong organizational skills, including proven ability to consistently meet deadlines
Fluency in English, both orally and written
Excellent communication and influencing skills
Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and as part of a team
Ability to travel
