The Senior Writer is responsible for developing and producing compelling content that supports Flagstar’s brand in external and internal communications. Effectively articulates brand voice and applies it to all communications. Considers and informs strategic communication priorities, understands business marketing objectives and delivers brand positioning to define and deliver content needs. This role is responsible for the ongoing management of the Flagstar brand voice and the Flagstar style guide on a continuous basis.

The successful candidate is creative, dedicated, and possesses excellent written and verbal communication skills. The Senior Writer has the ability to understand mediums and how content is best executed within that medium and/or mediums with a discerning eye. The Senior Writer will approach every opportunity within Flagstar and across our marketing agencies to reach brand alignment and consistency. The Senior Writer will also play a role in providing editorial feedback on content created by agency partners.

To thrive in this role, you will need to be creative, highly motivated, resourceful and collaborative, working closely with the Creative Director, Traffic Manager, and marketing partners to manage multiple workstreams across multiple product lines. The Senior Writer should be able to work independently with minimal guidance and direction from the Creative Director given skill-level and expertise.

Pay Range: $58,500.00 - $83,000.00 - $107,500.00

Job Responsibilities:

Participates in efforts to define and implement effective content to support marketing activity and campaigns. Adheres to creative direction and overall project vision while working with designers to ensure the creative needs are met. All content created must be done so in accordance with Flagstar’s brand voice. When needed, interview executives or other key business partners to write bios or other boilerplate content. Must have mastery of executing content across all types of media including but not limited to print, OOH, direct mail, digital, social, email, etc.
Refines, nurtures and consistently executes Flagstar’s brand voice as defined by current brand standards. This requires ongoing and active engagement with agency partners, the Creative Director and the Brand & Experience Leader to ensure alignment. Be the expert in articulating brand voice to marketing partners and other stakeholders as needed. Similarly, owns the Flagstar style guide, which is inclusive of treatment of content across all mediums and executions. Maintains style guides and acts as the subject matter expert and owner in dispensing direction on how content style guides are applied. Demonstrates familiarity with writing style guides, such as AP, Chicago, MLA and others, as well as their application. Interprets industry and competitive best practices as well as client feedback and offers effective alternative solutions when necessary. Due to brand voice and style guide responsibilities, the Senior Writer must be able to lead by influence.
As-needed, act as the Assistant Creative Director, filling in for the CD when needed. Provides feedback to content created by agency partners, as-needed, to ensure brand voice alignment, and accuracy of representation of Flagstar’s brand and businesses.
Assists Creative Director in the development of cross-team training across process and skillset updates, brand execution and tools (e.g., brand guidelines, style guides).
Bachelor’s Degree Required (Marketing, Journalism, Communications, Graphic Design, Art)
Minimum 7-10 years in copywriting or copy editing at an internal creative team, advertising agency, or freelance work, management experience is a plus.
Ability to articulate marketing messages in a clear, concise and compelling manner.
Must have ability to self-edit work to a limited degree, while relying on copy editor for final editorial check.
The ability to work with spec sheets, collateral design and a working knowledge of print production materials.
Creative problem-solving skills, critical thinking and ability to give presentations and sell concepts.
Ability to function independently and as a productive member in a team-focused environment.
Ability to handle multiple projects with changing priorities.
Must be able to multitask and perform well under tight deadlines.
Understanding of and ability to execute content as part of an integrated campaign across mediums (e.g., how content should flex from direct mail, to email to .com, etc as part of one campaign).
Ability to respond positively and collaboratively with marketing partners and key stakeholders.
Print production knowledge.
Ability to lead by influence and to step into a leadership role when needed.
Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills.
Computer proficiency required in addition to experience with and well versed in Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of banking and mortgage industries (preferred).
Knowledge/experience with Workfront a plus.
