The Border Belt Independent, a nonprofit, online newsroom, is adding staff and seeking a staff writer to cover in-depth, issues-oriented stories in four rural southeastern North Carolina counties. The Border Belt Independent (borderbelt.org) focuses primarily on subjects such as education, poverty, health, mental health, issues that adversely affect children, race and the economy.
- Experience in enterprise reporting desired.
- The reporter will have freedom to enterprise stories in the region, working with Editor Sarah Nagem. Nagem is an award-winning journalist, former editor at the (Raleigh) News & Observer and former national editor of the real-time news team at McClatchy.
In its first year, the North Carolina Press Association awarded the Border Belt Independent first place in the “General Excellence for Websites” in the online category, as well as several other first-place awards.
