What You’ll Do

Since 2010, Storyful’s newsroom has been working at the intersection of social media, news and technology to help media organizations tell the stories that matter most. As we expand the breadth and depth of our coverage, we are seeking an experienced editor to join our editorial team in London.

The ideal candidate will have a track record of overseeing and editing international news coverage and of finding compelling stories via social media, and of overseeing reporting that uses cutting-edge verification and open-source intelligence techniques.

The candidate will have a demonstrable track record of extensive newsroom experience; ideally showing use of open-source intelligence techniques. They will be at home in a fast-paced, video-led, breaking news environment, and able to drive editorial direction to serve a diverse set of media clients. They will be equally capable of overseeing and editing more in-depth reports and research projects. They will be comfortable working on a range of stories, from conflict zones, to weather events, and politics.

As an editor, the ideal candidate will be self-motivated, and able to motivate others. They will have experience of line management and helping colleagues with career development. They will have experience managing and growing relationships with key clients. They will demonstrate experience working with cross functional teams to build tools and processes to drive Storyful's mission. They will be comfortable representing the company both publicly and at industry events. They will have demonstrable experience of leading projects and innovations.

Responsibilities

Leading a team of journalists to develop quality reporting on a daily basis, while building and improving their skills and aiding their career development.

Managing key client relationships and representing Storyful in client meetings.

Liaising with editors in Dublin, New York & Sydney and internal stakeholders on continual improvement and evolution of Storyful’s journalism

Monitoring Storyful’s news feeds for emerging stories and undertaking advanced searches using our proprietary tools to discover original, eyewitness content

Gathering and verifying UGC images, posts, videos and other content from the social web

Writing and editing clean, concise and accurate copy for publication on the Storyful Newswire and social platforms

Leading newsroom direction on a day-to-day basis.

Maintaining an editorial calendar and discovery sources around the MENA region

Identifying, pitching, and executing opportunities for unique reporting and projects suitable for Storyful’s clients

Working to deadlines and targets

Flexibility to work various shifts as needed

Required Experience & Qualifications

At least 5 to 7 years’ experience in journalism, particularly online or broadcast journalism

Demonstrable high-level open-source intelligence and verification skills and a track record in using them in reporting

Experience of line-managing journalists strongly favoured

Experience of managing key stakeholder relationships an advantage

A self-starting, passionate journalist who is plugged into current events around the world

A fluid, natural communicator who has experience writing and editing copy for publication. All finalists will be administered a copy test.

Ability to source and verify original content from across the social web

Excellent computer skills, including basic knowledge of spreadsheets and publishing within content management systems

Foreign-language skills are strongly favoured, but not required

Video-editing skills are an advantage, but not mandatory

Location: Sydney

Work Arrangement: Hybrid - 3 days per week in office
