TCB City Beat Reporter

New Posted 31 October 2022 | Greensboro/Winston-Salem, North Carolina | Triad City Beat

The City Beat reporter will attend every Greensboro and Winston-Salem city council meeting (about four a month), filing 3-5 stories a week, long and short, about politics, policy and their effects on the people who live here. The position is funded this term by a grant from the NC Local News Lab Fund. And because it is funded by a nonprofit, every bit of reporting that results from the City Beat will be available for free to every news outlet that cares to use it. The ideal candidate for the City Beat is an early-career journalist, though seasoned reporters and rookies alike will be considered for the position. College newspaper experience counts, as does familiarity with city government. Preference will be given to any candidate who brings more diversity to our newsroom, which is a crucial quality for modern media organizations. Salary is through the grant: $25,000/year to start, which is comparable with other TCB newsroom salaries. We know it’s not a lot of money, but the workload is manageable, and the experience is invaluable — most of the journalists who have worked with TCB reporters and editors have gone on to do big things in this industry.
