Deputy Managing Editor

New Posted 14 February 2024 | Durham, North Carolina | The Assembly

The Assembly is seeking an experienced editor who can help lead and organize our growing newsroom.

This person will report to our managing editor and work closely with editors and reporters across the newsroom. We are looking for a dynamic journalist who enjoys wearing multiple hats – including story editing, newsletter writing, layout and CMS management, and audience engagement. We want someone who is excited not just about making our reporting shine, but about contributing to our strategy and growth in 2024 and beyond. This person should be excited to work in an ambitious news startup serving the state of North Carolina.

The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in journalism, including time spent as both a reporter and editor. Experience working in North Carolina is a plus but not required; we will need the person to be located in the state when the job starts.

Responsibilities

Story editing, including features, investigations, and shorter news items
Story layout and CMS management
Writing and editing newsletters
Working across teams to produce and optimize editorial products, including website, newsletters, print magazine, and social media
Collaborating with reporters and editors on story ideas and execution
Helping plan and launch new newsletters, news products, and reader engagement initiatives

Qualifications

10 years experience in journalism, including time spent reporting and editing
Able to write with a clear, engaging voice that connects with our readers, and to self-edit
Familiarity with the standards and ethics of journalism, as well as The Assembly’s style of long-form, narrative reporting
Able to work both independently and collaboratively

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary will begin around $80,000; we are open to higher salaries for more experienced candidates. We’ll ask you to be upfront during the interview process with your needs and we’ll do the same about our abilities.

We offer a competitive benefits package, including health care, parental leave, and life insurance.

This position will report to managing editor Kate Sheppard and will work closely with the rest of our team.

How to Apply

To apply, we invite candidates to submit answers to the following questions:

Tell us about a favorite story or project you have worked on, either as a reporter or editor. What made it stand out for you?
What makes a good story great? What role should editors play in that process?
What should our newsroom be doing to establish The Assembly as the place for statewide news? Where are we succeeding and failing so far?
What excites you most about this role? What makes you nervous?

Email answers in a pdf along with a resume, the names and contact information for three references, and links to three writing samples or clips to jobs@theassemblync.com. You do not need to send a cover letter. We anticipate hiring for this position in early 2024.
