The Associated Press is looking for a graphics artist to build animations related to climate change. In this role, you will focus on solutions, looking at how new technologies work and how they compare to the burning of fossil fuels. We’re looking for a storyteller who can help digital audiences better understand climate change and renewable energy. This is a temporary, grant-funded position lasting 24 months, with the potential to become permanent.
This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: You will build animations around wind turbines, solar and geothermal energies, carbon capture, “green” hydrogen, regenerative farming techniques and more. Animations will include weather phenomena and impact – for example, flooding – along with scientific processes like trees absorbing carbon dioxide or the various ways that methane is released into the atmosphere. You will also be available to help build animations around general news. You’ll work collaboratively with other animators, editors and journalists from the Climate team around the globe. You will be encouraged to come forward with your own ideas for animated stories. You'll approach each story across formats from beginning to end, working across departments to deliver the best storytelling experience for AP’s global audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced skills in design, layout and typography across digital platforms. You have a proven track record of identifying smart, innovative ways to build animations that engage readers.
• Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere).
• Cinema 4D 3d skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills: you’re a considerate collaborator, valued partner and team player.
• Excellent written communication and presentation skills.
• Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines,
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years' experience of digital, print and motion design experience working for daily newspapers, broadcast stations, digital news outlets, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
• Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a strong plus.
• Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
• A portfolio or work samples are required.
