The Associated Press seeks an enterprising reporter with a proven track record of developing sources and breaking stories to work as a general assignment reporter in Minneapolis, covering a host of issues, with a focus on law enforcement and courts. This is a temporary position lasting nine months, with the potential to become permanent, covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant News Director for the Midwest, you will seek to consistently break news and produce distinct, deeply reported enterprise on a variety of issues in Minnesota. You should be a self-starter who is comfortable with freedom of information requests and campaign finance records and knows how to build a story from the local level and frame it for broader audiences in the U.S. and around the world. Among other things, you’ll be tasked with finding and executing stories that surprise, outrage or delight the AP’s global audience. You hold the powerful accountable, explain important public policy issues and tell the human stories behind the headlines.
We’re looking for someone who:
can demonstrate a history of successful reporting on deadline and an ability to write accurate, lively copy that requires minimal editing.
is skilled at source building.
gets scoops and goes the extra mile to get exclusive material.
can work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be a news junkie who thrives on competition, writes quickly with creative flair and has a strong feel for the types of stories that resonate nationally and globally. An ability to tackle complicated stories fearlessly on a wide variety of topics is a must. You must be willing to work in all formats when necessary.
We’re looking for someone who works effectively as part of a team, has a great news sense and the ability to drive stories forward ahead of tough competition. You’re eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity. As an AP journalist, you must be willing and able to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least two years of full-time work as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
