The Associated Press seeks an enterprising reporter with a history of developing sources and breaking stories to cover science as a reporter based in any U.S. city with an AP bureau. In this role, you'll find and report stories that will resonate with a general audience – whether deep in scientific journals or in the biggest news of the day – producing smart explainers and off-the-news enterprise for a global audience. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the health and science editor, you will cover a wide range of science topics such as paleontology, natural history, earth science and astronomy.
We’re looking for someone who will:
have the creativity and insight to find the science in everything.
work among a team of journalists, reporters and editors to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage of science that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with the diverse teams of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
be willing and able to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
Preferred Qualifications: You have strong news judgment and a deep dedication to evidence-based journalism, and you're comfortable in more than one media format, reporting breaking news as well as enterprise. You should have demonstrated excellence as a beat reporter, with a deep record of delivering exclusive and distinctive spot news and enterprise stories on a complex and challenging beat. You have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms. You have strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time work as an editor or reporter at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
All applicants must be able to work in the United States or be able to gain permission to do so.
Advanced-level professional fluency in written and spoken English. Professional fluency in a language besides English is a plus.

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary between $46,047.00 and $80,714.00 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
