The Associated Press seeks a talented video journalist and newsroom leader to work as a senior producer in Dakar, Senegal or Rabat, Morocco. We’re looking for someone who will guide and support staff and freelance video journalists to craft a video news report that is rich in exclusive news, compelling live video and distinct, deeply reported enterprise. You will be part of a dynamic operation in Africa, collaborating closely with text reporters and photojournalists – and at times directing overall all-formats coverage – to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe. The job comes with an expansive assignment to help improve the storytelling about Africa’s development, spanning a range of topics including water and sanitation, nutrition and urban planning, gender-based violence and equality.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the deputy news director for Africa, you will shoot, write and edit video — including LIVE video — stories for AP’s video customers and platforms. You will plan for both upcoming events and unexpected breaking news. You will use social media and other platforms to inform reporting and pursue and obtain UGC, and you’ll help lead discussions about how best to pursue and promote video-driven projects and storytelling. You must be prepared to travel throughout West Africa – often at short notice and in hostile environments – to cover breaking news.
Preferred qualifications: You must have demonstrated excellence as a video journalist and/or field video producer and familiarity with West Africa, with a deep record of creating and/or guiding exclusive and distinctive video to publication. You have proven technical skills in television and online video production, including knowledge of live video operations and satellite, fiber and FTP transmission, as well as editing non-linear videos, preferably with Adobe Premiere. You are creative, innovative and agile, and you work effectively in deadline-driven, dynamic newsroom and field environments, on breaking news and on short- and long-term projects.
We’re looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills who will work effectively as part of a team. You have great news judgment, and you communicate and drive stories that people will want to share and discuss on social media and other platforms. You’re eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity, and you can juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines. As an AP journalist, you must be ready to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as three years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
All applicants must be able to work in Senegal or Morocco, or be able to gain permission to do so.
Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Competency in at least one local language is a major plus.
Advanced-level professional competency in shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
Application Deadline: January 19, 2024 @ 11:59 PM ET
