Senior Photo Editor (Supervisory)

The Atlantic is looking for a senior photo editor to join the newsroom. This role will primarily focus on photography for the print magazine, but will also provide support as needed on digital projects. The ideal candidate will be highly creative and a driven problem-solver with sound journalistic judgment and superb aesthetic taste. This candidate should have extensive research and assigning capabilities for photography in all genres, excellent communication skills, and deep industry knowledge. The primary responsibilities will be to research, conceptualize, art direct, and commission or license photography, and to manage workflow and other photo logistics. The ideal candidate should have a wide range of knowledge about photography and visual storytelling and be able to identify a diverse array of photographers globally to contribute to The Atlantic. They should be a clear communicator and team player, being highly collaborative while also able to independently oversee assignments from ideation through to completion. They should be detail oriented to ensure assignments meet our editorial standards on our timelines. The senior photo editor will report to the Associate Creative Director for the print magazine and work closely with the entire art department and the larger newsroom.

Qualifications of the ideal candidate:

10+ years of experience working in a magazine photo department

Demonstrated experience conceptualizing, commissioning, art directing, and producing photoshoots

Strong knowledge of photographic usage and rights issues

Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask

Strong collaborative skills and the ability to communicate effectively both up and down, and across different departments

Ability to work on tight deadlines

Salary Minimum: $100,000, Salary Maximum: $125,000
