Data Journalist

The Baltimore Banner seeks a seasoned Data Journalist to join our award-winning data team. We’re in search of an innovative individual capable of transforming complex data into engaging stories, intriguing charts and interactive features, while enthusiastically exploring new technologies and trends.

As a data-centric newsroom, we place a strong emphasis on the value and insights derived from data. As a Data Journalist, you will partner with our talented team to devise and report on the key stories and data products that define our newsroom's work. This role invites you to pitch unique ideas and shepherd stories or create user-centric data products from ideation through to publication.

We welcome candidates with diverse data expertise who may not meet every requirement. The successful applicant will exhibit a strong passion for their work, coupled with a clear vision of their goals within this role. While journalism experience is highly desirable, it's not strictly necessary. Specialization in a specific beat is a bonus, but versatility across various beats is expected.
Responsibilities:

Collaborate with newsroom reporters and other data journalists to do some combination of storytelling, data visualization and news application development
Develop a deep understanding of the databases you analyze and leverage this expertise to cover breaking news and enterprise stories
Procure data through various channels, including public records requests, data scraping, and begging

Requirements:

A proven track record of using data to craft impactful stories or develop data products
Proficiency in data analysis using tools like Python, R or SQL
Capability to carry out traditional reporting tasks such as conducting interviews and making phone calls
Experience in creating data visualizations with tools like Datawrapper, Flourish, or D3
A detail-oriented mindset, a naturally inquisitive nature and a commitment to ongoing learning and development
A collaborative spirit and willingness to work with others
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to both give and receive constructive feedback
A commitment to upholding journalistic values and ethics
