The Baltimore Banner is a nonprofit newsroom founded to bring high-quality local journalism to the Baltimore metro area. We are creating a vibrant, strong, trustworthy, and sustainable news organization, seeking to re-imagine the future of local news. Using a multi-platform news operation, covering a broad range of topics from local government to culture and the arts. We tell stories that reflect the community, connecting neighbors, holding government institutions accountable, and making sense of the world. All this work is grounded in truth. About the role:
The Baltimore Banner is looking for an enterprise editor to help guide some of its most creative, important, and ambitious work.
The enterprise editor will oversee a group of reporters, while also working across newsroom coverage teams, to help bring original stories on a wide range of topics from idea to publication, shaping compelling narratives, bringing clarity to complex issues, and editing for maximum impact. The editor should also be comfortable with guiding investigative and data-driven stories and telling stories in innovative and nontraditional ways for a digital audience. The editor is expected to help reporters strike a proper balance between allowing sufficient reporting and writing time while not letting stories and projects drag out needlessly. This editor will report to and work closely with our deputy managing editor who oversees investigations and projects. The enterprise editor will also collaborate with our visuals and social teams to ensure that we are best using photographs and illustrations to tell our stories and using analytics to promote our work to reach the most readers.
Responsibilities:
Oversee reporters who work on stories that are not related to news releases or press conferences but are conceived of on their own.
Use digital publishing, analytics to help drive coverage
Collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom
Work with the social media team to best connect readers with our content
Generate innovative ideas for audience growth
Represent The Banner in the community as needed -- in person or on television or radio appearances
Use and understand newsroom analytics to help hone and identify the coverage that serves readers
Requirements:
A minimum of 7 years of experience in journalism
Managerial experience
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
Strong editing skills and ability to quickly make complex topics understandable
A strong instinct for news
Digital savvy and a familiarity with audience analytics
Comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Enthusiasm for news and content that will resonate with readers
