The Baltimore Banner hires an opinion editor to curate op-eds, letters to the editor, and other reader commentary. We see the opinion page as a critical engagement tool for our digital news product and a way to reach different audiences and fulfill our mission of covering traditionally underserved markets. The ideal job candidate will have strong editing skills and be able to work with outside writers whose writing prowess may not be as strong as staff. They will pay attention to diversity and choose commentary that spans a wide range of viewpoints and comes from writers of various backgrounds. They will not let their personal views influence which reader contributions we publish. The opinion editor will also have a strong eye for detail and make sure stories are heavily fact-checked for accuracy and misinformation. They will ensure that opinion writers follow The Baltimore Banner’s ethics policy to avoid conflicts. The job also requires someone well-versed in the many topics people may write about.
