We’re seeking a reporter to focus on the challenges facing today's labour market, telling stories of the people impacted and exploring solutions that will improve work culture now and in the future. You will champion innovations, technological or otherwise that are shaping society.
You will be responsible for writing articles and producing journalism across all of The Big Issue’s editorial channels, developing contacts and champions in your specialist area, understanding and anticipating audience interests, driving traffic to the various branches of the wider Big Issue Group and raising the profile of The Big Issue and its mission in everything you do.
You will have at least two years experience in a newsroom, magazine or similar publication. You will be self-motivated and a team player, with a good nose for stories and ability to explain complex issues to readers.
Main Duties:
Write news stories and features to daily and weekly deadlines.
Keep the editorial calendar up to date and plan ahead to make sure Big Issue is part of, and frequently leading, the national conversation within your area.
Use social media to source and promote stories.
Use audience analytics to inform editorial decisions and meet targets
Regularly research SEO keywords and produce high-ranking evergreen content in your area of focus
Contribute to the sourcing and production of multimedia content and always strive to create this additional content that goes beyond words on the page
Write regular newsletters within specialist areas.
Attend regular meetings to update on editorial activity and consistently pitch fresh content
Desired Skills and experience:
At least two years’ experience in a newsroom, magazine or similar publication
Experience developing sources and contacts as part of a beat
Familiarity with digital production processes and CMSs such as WordPress
Understanding of keyword research and SEO best practices
Experience using social media to source and promote stories
Salary and Benefits:
The salary offered will be £30,000 per annum for London and £27,000 per annum for Glasgow based.
Incremental holiday entitlement starting at 25 days per year plus bank holidays (pro-rata for part time staff) plus paid leave to care for a sick child or grandchild and a sick or elderly relation
