Senior Audio Producer

New Posted 6 February 2024 | Boston, MA | The Boston Globe

The Boston Globe is looking for an experienced journalist and audio producer to oversee a new, always-on podcast featuring some of the best from our newsroom. This person must have a minimum of 5 years of experience telling audio stories in a journalistic setting; we’re looking for someone who is a keen observer of the news with strong editorial judgment and the ability to assemble audio stories that will captivate a regional – even national – audience.

This role is integral to the Globe’s ambition to build on the success of shows like Gladiator, Last Seen, and Love Letters. The person who fills it must be willing and able to adapt to newsroom priorities – capable of jumping on breaking news stories and working under tight deadlines, but also adept at thinking laterally and helping sculpt complicated narratives.

The Globe’s new Senior Audio Producer will be stepping into a dynamic newsroom, tasked with helping the Head of Audio capture the best stories for the ears of listeners in New England and far beyond.

Experience in program development, launching new shows, and overseeing small teams is an asset.

We want someone who is brimming with ideas, willing to take creative risks and able to work with print reporters and help guide them in the finer points of how to tell a great audio news story.

Creativity is a must. So is journalistic rigor. And a team spirit!

Responsibilities:

Attending news meetings, listening for stories with audio potential
Working closely with reporters and editors to produce, write and mix audio news stories
Helping with the development and launch of new programs
Collaborating with hosts to help them shine and to draw out the best performance
Arranging, recording, directing, and producing interviews in studio and in the field
Technical abilities include recording interviews, gathering clean audio, editing interviews and mixing with multiple tracks
Story editing and script vetting
Working with reporters and hosts on studio tracking
Writing, editing, and workshopping show scripts
Producing and mixing episodes for review
Show & episode conception and planning
Assisting with show promotion, newsletter copy, social media demands, and creative assets as needed

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism preferred but not required
At least 5 years of journalism experience and 5 years of working in audio
Strong understanding of journalistic conventions on ethics, fairness & accuracy
Track record as a team player who can demonstrate creativity, collegiality, independence, and attention to detail
Extensive knowledge of the audio storytelling/podcast market & platforms
Entrepreneurial spirit; willingness to embrace uncertainty and lack of definition as opportunities evolve
Facility with basics of audio work, including file transferring, asset management, and other collaborative tools
Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and multi-task in a high-pressure environment
Story editing experience is a plus
A willingness to adapt and be audience focused with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
