Are you seeking a journalism career with a wide variety of stories you cover? We value watchdog reporters with the ability to break news and show the impact of issues to the community. Although the primary beat is covering police, fire and courts, flexibility is needed to cover other local news events. One day you may interview the family of a shooting victim, another day a business opening, and somedays, you would react at the drop of a hat to cover a fire, accident, natural disaster or local government issue.
Every day is different. This is true local journalism where one can make an impact on a community which benefits from local news. Responsibilities include writing, taking photos for the paper, posting content online and on social media to engage and grow our digital subscriber base.
If you are able to write clearly, develop sources and can take initiative to find stories, this may be the role for you. The successful candidate will be proficient in AP writing and reporting, photography, videography and digital platforms. We are looking for someone who seek visual/audio storytelling opportunities and has experience using social media to promote stories.
Preference will be given to candidates with a journalism degree, although internships and experience will be considered. New graduates/journalists are welcome to apply and the Columbus Telegram provides an opportunity for journalists to learn and grow. This position will work some night and weekend hours. Candidates must be comfortable and able to utilize digital media in addition to print. A valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance is required.
