The Galveston County Daily News is accepting applications for reporters. The organization’s award-winning staff covers a growing county of 300,000 people on the Texas Gulf Coast less than an hour’s drive from Houston and based in one of the state’s most popular tourist towns. The jobs require experience reporting for daily or weekly news organizations. They entail covering a variety of subjects and occasionally will require weekend and holiday work. Although The Daily News provides a flexible work environment, these are not remote work positions.
Ideal candidates would:
• Be self-starters and fast learners
• Be able to work alone and as part of a team
• Be at least interested to learn the skills necessary to produce high-level enterprise and investigative work
• Be able to manage a fast-paced, demanding newsroom
• Be interested in the crafts of reporting and writing
• Be innately curious
The editors care about both the quality of the newspaper and the quality of the work experience. When our reporters move on, they tend to move up, rather than out of journalism. We prize thorough, balanced reporting written with style and vigor.
Recent college graduates without published work will not be considered. Candidates with solid clips from internships or work on good university newspapers will be. If you’re solid in the basics, excited about journalism, ready to work hard and eager to learn, this might be the job for you.
