Deputy Managing Editor

The i is looking for an experienced managing editor to act as No2 in the team that underpins the strategic direction and day-to-day function of the news operation.

The individual will be familiar with how a hybrid digital-print newsroom operates, and understand how to help journalists perform at their best. They will work with finance, HR, commercial and editorial department heads to ensure smooth running of the organisation, and be involved in staff engagement and development .

Organisational skills, leadership and problem-solving are all key to this role.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

Budget management - help set budgets in conjunction with other management executives and ensure that they are kept to.
HR - assist on solving personnel issues, working with HR, to ensure the smooth running of i editorial.
Work with section heads to lead talent identification and recruitment across all departments.
Assist on regulatory issues and complaints, including liaison with Ipso.
Work with section heads to develop and refine content strategies across i’s platforms.
Work with other executives to build internal business cases for product development and new initiatives, particularly in digital.
Occasionally represent i through media engagements, industry forums, political and cultural contacts.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

Significant experience in a national news environment, including executive experience as a desk head, or significant managerial experience in a news environment.
Ability to run budgets and manage those who are running budgets.
Proven people manager with experience of running teams of 10 or more.
Familiarity with operating in regulated environments and understanding of complaints handling processes.
Familiarity in working with commercial departments to ensure that the editorial offer can support revenue growth.
Experience of working in digital and/or print at a high level, and particularly in helping transformational operations from print to digital.
Substantial experience of HR issues including hiring talent.
