Job Introduction

i is seeking a Weekend News Editor to help plan and drive high-impact digital coverage and lead the breaking news operation on Saturdays and Sundays.

The successful candidate will help conceive, commission and execute news projects aimed at ensuring strong digital coverage over the weekend.

They will also have the confidence and ability to oversee the i’s digital news operation over the weekend, and lead shifts elsewhere as required. Working on a Wednesday-Sunday shift pattern, they will contribute to the daily running of the i’s newsdesk, working with reporters and news editors as required.

This is an exciting new role aimed at helping maintain i’s award winning journalism over a 7-day week.

It requires a self-starter who is comfortable making big calls on live news coverage, has impeccable news judgment and a thorough understanding of digital publishing best practice.

Job specifications

To lead the digital news operation on Saturdays and Sundays, managing a team of reporters and ensuring the operation is having maximum digital impact
To use their impeccable news judgement to ensure the homepage is showcasing i’s journalism and major breaking news
To coordinate with newsdesk colleagues and reporters throughout the week to ensure there is a package of strong content for the weekend
To conceive, commission and manage high impact stories throughout the week
To assist with the daily running of the i’s newsdesk, as required by the Head of News
To make external commissions aimed at maximising digital impact over the weekend
Using analytics to develop and drive forward stories and exclusive news projects

Skills and Experience

Excellent people-management skills, and a proven ability to get the best out of experienced journalists
Experience of leading a team, and a desire to be leading from the front in a busy and demanding newsroom
A self-starter bursting with ideas and a track record in developing exclusive journalism and leading a team
Two years’ experience on a national or major regional newsdesk or news website
Strong understanding of the demands of digital publishing is essential for this role
Strong news judgement – and an ability to spot news stories and make the case for them in conference or to individual editors
Understanding of SEO and how to use social media to promote stories is key
Ability to give direction, advice, and feedback to reporters
Approach the news agenda in a creative and original manner
Good knowledge of media law and the Editors’ Code of Practice
