Crime Reporter

New Posted 29 January 2024 | Manhattan, Kansas | The Manhattan Mercury

We're looking for a smart, enterprising journalist to cover the police and courts beat for The Manhattan Mercury in Manhattan, Kansas.

We want a reporter who can keep the facts straight while documenting arrests — but also someone who can be creative and resourceful while pursuing longer, more complex pieces. If the thought of being on the scene of a murder or in the courtroom during a trial sounds exciting, we want to hear from you.

Manhattan is a great college town in the scenic Flint Hills. It's home to Kansas State University, and Fort Riley is just 15 miles down the road. Nearby, Tuttle Creek Lake and Konza Prairie wildlife preserve provide lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Mercury is a family-owned daily with in-house printing. It's published five days a week. The Mercury offers a benefits package that includes medical, vision, dental, three weeks vacation and profit-sharing plan. Bachelor's degree and reporting experience a plus, but most of all, we want someone who is intelligent, curious and willing to work as part of a team.

To apply, please send a cover letter, résumé and three to five writing clips to executive editor Megan Moser at mmoser@themercury.com. No phone calls, please.
